Bully Pulpit Golf Course Assistant Superintendent

Summary/Objective  

Under the supervision of the Superintendent, the Assistant Superintendent evaluates turf management and determines appropriate methods of resolving issues, assists in reviewing and evaluating current procedures, and assists in developing short and long-range goals to ensure efficient maintenance and operation of the Bully Pulpit Golf Course. 

 

Duties/Responsibilities 

Assists the Superintendent in planning and organizing the work 

Assists in overseeing the grounds maintenance operations of the Bully Pulpit Golf Course. 

Assists in managing, coordinating, and planning grounds maintenance work by preparing regular schedules for irrigation, mowing, fertilization pesticide application, and other turf and grass cultural practices. 

Assists in in planning and scheduling work for assigned golf course seasonal personnel to ensure proper distribution of maintenance duties. 

Train staff on proper equipment operation, established procedures and techniques sot that staff are aware of how to properly perform assigned tasks. 

Assist with promoting and enforcing safety practices in accordance with local, state and federal regulations. Assists in training of employees in safety procedures and internal procedures. 

Assists in supervising seasonal personnel functions to include hiring, promotion, and transfer recommendations. 

Identifies turf grass disease, weed types, and insect types, and determines the appropriate chemical application strategy for resolving the issue. 

Determines the proper formulas and applications of fungicides and pesticides through understanding of fertilizer and chemicals formulas. 

Assists in supervising and performing maintenance and repairs of Bully Pulpit Golf Course equipment, including establish records and assisting in monitoring the inventory of all equipment and tools. 

Assists in developing short and long-range goals to ensure the efficient maintenance operation of the Bully Pulpit Golf Course. 

Assists in annual budget preparation and maintaining records. 

Assists in reviewing and evaluating current procedures and makes recommendations to increase efficiency, productivity and reduce operating costs. 

Perform other related duties as necessary or assigned. 

 

Supervisory Responsibilities 

Hires and trains seasonal golf course grounds staff. 

Schedules, organizes, and assigns projects to members of the seasonal golf course grounds team. 

Conducts performance evaluations that are timely and constructive. 

Handle discipline and termination of employees as needed in accordance with TRMF policy. 

 

Required Skills/Abilities

Must be familiar with proper and correct techniques to safely operate equipment and safely apply chemicals per manufactures specifications. 

Excellent oral and written communication skills, as well as, a high degree of leadership qualities, administrative and executive ability, especially in terms of problem solving and decision-making. 

Ability to interact professionally and maintain effective working relationships with superiors, co-workers and subordinates. 

Must be able to multi-task in a fast-paced environment. 

Ability to lead and teach others. 

Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite or similar software. 

Required Education and Experience 

Any combination of experience and training equivalent to an Associate’s Degree in Agronomy, Horticulture, Golf and Sports Turf Management, or related major. 

Two-year’s experience in golf course operation. 

Prior supervisory experience preferred but not required. 

Working knowledge of golf course operations and practices necessary. 

Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license. 

Automate irrigation systems experience preferred. 

Possesses Pesticide License or able to obtain within 90 days of hire. 

Up-to-date knowledge of latest golf course tools, technologies, and best practices. 

Participating knowledge of the game of golf. 

Knowledge of the construction, establishment, and maintenance practices employed on golf course putting greens, tee, fairways, roughs, and bunkers; planting, cultivation, and pruning of ornamental plants, shrubs, and trees; the characteristics and proper use of various fertilizers and soil conditions; pesticide control method and materials; drainage methods; and watering practices and irrigation systems, including wells, pumps, and automatic controls. 

Knowledge off construction and maintenance of the maintenance facility, restrooms, fences, bridges, golf cart paths, service roads, parking lots, ponds and streams. 

Work Environment 

Work hours may include days and evenings on weekdays and weekends. Subject to inside and outside environmental conditions. May be exposed to inclement weather, potentially dangerous chemicals, solvents, pesticides, herbicides, fertilizers, misdirected golf balls, sharp and rapid equipment movement on a daily basis. Injury or sickness may result if safety policies and practices are not properly followed. 

 

Physical Requirements

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. 

Continuously in outdoor weather conditions including cold, heat and humidity for extended periods of time. 

Prolonged periods of standing and walking.

Able to bend, stretch, push, pull, and move as needed to reach, clean and service machinery.

Repetitive use of hands, arms and fingers.

Occasionally sitting, climbing grasping, lifting and carrying.

Must be able to visually inspect machines and equipment.

Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.

 

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work 

This is a full-time position that regularly requires long hours and weekend work.
